Dorian Gray CH 14 (Tues 1/25)

How does Dorian's reaction when he awakens on the morning after the murder help characterize him?

  1. The text states that Dorian doesn't really remember what he had done the night before. The author states that he wakes up kind of happy and joyful as if everything is good. Then the memory comes back and he thinks about how much he himself has suffered but he has no sympathy at all towards Basil. He tries very hard not to think of Basil anymore. This shows that he does in a sense feel guilty but I don't think he feels wrong about the situation at all. He continues to make himself think pleasant thoughts to forget about Basil but it is somewhat hard because he did murder the man. I think he doesn't feel bad about killing Basil because in his mind, he kind of blames Basil for the person he has become. In the past chapter he looks at the picture and is filled with rage and kills the artist Basil as if he is the reason for the way the portrait looks now.

  2. As Dorian Awakens The Next Morning, It Seems As Though He Didnt Remember At First. It Appeared That MAybe It Was The The Picture That Took Control Of His Mind And Cause Him To React The Way He did The Previous Night. BAsil Is Said To Be The Blame For Why Dorain has Become The Person Dorian Is Today But At The Same Time, Dorain Says He Doesn't Know If He Regrets It Or Not. When Dorains Finally Remembers The Wrong He HAve Done. He Shows No Remorse Towards BAsil, It Kind of Akward Because HE JUST MURDERED A MAN!!! This Characterizes Him As A Callous Man (To Me). Basil HAs No Sincere Feelings For A man Who Believed And Would Adulate Him At Any Cause.

  3. Dorian forgot what happen last night, well at least he tries to forget bout wat happens last night. He tries to think of happy thought in his head. He really didnt care about what happen during last night. He dont have any fear in his about whats goin to happen if some one finds out.Its like he didnt change but every time the picture apperance change he go cruel. It is like the picture is his soul.he dont even regret what he did.Even thought he doesnt care about what happen he still feels guilty about the murder she did.

  4. The Chapter started off with Dorain waking up the next morining around 9am. Dorain woke up smiling and joyful like nothing happened. Dorain awoke like he didnt do anything wrong, he act like he didnt just kill a man last night but he did. He was thinkin it was a terrible dream. This shows Dorain character as care free. He act like he cares for nothing else at this point in time, the only thing he seems to care about is himself.

  5. This chapter actually tricks me because i had the state of mind that Dorian had just gone mad the day that he killed Basil, but in the text it said when he woke he proceeded to keep that same hatred for Basil even though he was dead. "He winced at the memy of all that he had suffered, and for a moment the same curious feeling of loathing for Basil Hallward, that had made him kill him as he sat in the chair, came back to him, and he grew cold with passion. Without reading the rest of the chapter i ran with the fact that Dorian's first thought as he awoke was hatred for a dead man, that he had murdered proves that Dorian is not the same and he may be pure evil.

  6. For one when the servent came in the room, the text says "Dorian was sleeping quite peacefully" but he really didnt dream at all for the fear of pictures of pleasure or pain. While sitting up to sip on his chocolate, the whole horrible event came back to memory, he thought maybe he should feel some pity for basil since his lifeless body was sitting in that same chair in the sunlight. "Such hideous things were for the darkness, not for the day." As he smokes his ciggertete he starts to draw pictures, and as he draws he draws faces that look almost simliar to Basil's face. He goes to bookshelve to get him a book. This is where his conscience is coming after him. Hencant stop thinking about Basil and the horrible events that took place the night before. He is becmoning a horrible, sick wretched person.

But it seems as tho the portrait causes all those problems for him to seem possessed as the picture Ages. He seems as though he us evil.

  8. In the text it stated that Dorian woke up from a peaceful, dreamless sleep, but after a while the memories of murder started to nag at his mind. this shows that Dorian has a conscious and knows that he has done wrong. He tries to take his mind off what he has done by reading the poem that Adrien Singleton has wrote for him, but he still can't keep his mind of the crime he committed. Then with his guilty conscious he tries to get Alan Campbell to try and get rid of the body. Dorian is starting to get paranoid and is just slowly falling apart.
