What is is the significance of the Florentine cabinet?  What does the diction in the description of the cabinet reveal about its contents?

  1. The word Florentine means having a dull chased or rubbed finished and is also used of gold. He looked at the cabinet as if it held something he had a craving for a long time. The text indicates his facial expression seems to show that he looked fascinated. The word choice used in the passage to describe the cabinet is that it is made out of ebony, which is a black color, and inlaid with ivory and blue lapis. He then lit a cigarette but then threw it out as if it wasn't enough for his craving. This shows there must be some kind of drug inside the cabinet. The drug was described as "a green paste waxy in lustre, the odour curiously heavy and persistent." The diction used in the description of the cabinet does help reveal that their is a type of drug in the cabinet.

  2. This very important contained something most important to him. It may have something of value contained inside of them Wilde used descriptive words such as "made out of ebony, inlaid with ivory and blue lapis" Sounding like something out of royality. He simply went crazy when he laid his eyes upon this cabinet. Like a cocoaine abuser does when his dealer shows them what he has. He does things such as "His breath quickened. ...He lit a ciggerette and then threw it away...His eyelides drooped till the the long fringed lashes almost touched his cheek. This must be something he really needs, the box contained a "green paste waxy in lustre, the ordour curiously heavy and persistent.

  4. See in the text when Dorian looks at the Florentine Cabinet, he seem to have a "mad craving," for whatever was in it. Then this is where the " Black and Gold box'" come into play. I think the craving comes from his opium addiction. That is why this cabinet is so important.

  5. This Florentine Cabinet must means alot to him because it contains sometime special in or it. When he lit a ciggarrette he looked at the cabinet and threw the ciggarrette away with the quickness. He looked at the cabinet like it was a drug or something like he had to have it. In the text it states that " mad craving came over him. he lit a ciggarette and threw it away. His eyelids drooped till the long fringed lashes almost touched his cheek. But he still watched the cabinet. At last he got up from the sofa on which he had been lyin, went over to it, and, having unlocked it, touched some hidden spring. A small drawer opened and a small black chinese box appereared." This reveals that the cabinet had something very important within it.
