1. Why does thinking of her mother make Eveline want to escape?
2. Read carefully the water imagery in the final paragraphs of the story. How does this imagery help to suggest Eveline's reasons for not leaving with Frank?
1. Eveline thinking of her mother makes her want to escape because she knows that is the only person who can protect her. Eveline refuses to be treated how her mother had been treated with no respect. 2. The water imagery helps to suggest Eveline's reasons for not leaving because "the seas of the world tumbled about her heart" could refer to the promises she made with her mother and how she keeps them close to her heart. Frank was drawing her in "he would drown her" meaning he would make her lose sight of her promises that she made with her mother which mean the most. "Amid the seas she sent a cry of anguish", she couldn't leave because she knew deep down she could still hold the house together she would just be choosing to leave on her own if she had left, breaking the promises she made with her mother.
