In the text, Dorian, the Duchess, and Lord Henry are having a conversation about practical topics. Dorian tells the Duchess that Lord Henry's philosophy is always right. This is when she asks him does his philosophy make him happy. "I have never searched for happiness. Who wants happiness? I have searched for pleasure." I think this is why he didn't stay wit Sibyl Vane because he was pleasured by what he seen with his eyes. Once she turned him off by her acting poorly, he let her know he didn't want anything to do with her any longer. Also, Dorian doesn't really seem happy as a person anymore. He is now using drugs to help "pleasure him" instead of living his life in happiness.
Well when Dorian has party guests over he always is uneasy and has to excuse himself. He Doesn't feel the pleasure of having friends around. The Duchess wanted to know if he had ever been in love, he couldn't hold a conversation with her. He can't remember pleasure. He is a loner now, he has no feelings. He is losing himself. To me this is how he became after meeting Lord Henry and taking his advice.
Chapter 17 starts of with Dorian having a conversation with the pretty duchess of monmouth and her husband. So Dorian was asked about has he ever chased the pursuit of happiness. I think that Dorian never searched for happiness he was only looking for pleasure, for example when he stopped talking to Sibyl its was only because she stopped actin, he was only with her because he was pleasured by her acting skills. Dorain also doesnt seem happy as a person anymore, so he turns to drugs to make him happy.
Dorian's Character Has Changed In Regards To Pleasure Because In The Beginning When He, And Basil First Began To Talk About Sibyl He Was In Love With Her. He Stated That He Loved Her, And That Love Was His Pleasure. Now he States That He Has Never Searched For The Pusuit Of Happiness. He Went From Love Being His Happiness To Pleasure Becoming His Hapiness.
Dorian wasn't in pursuit of happines but pleasure sand pleasure with his eyes not his heart this is what messed him ip with sibyl and y he started going crazy over his portrait when it started to age. He doesn't search for happiness but drugs give him his pleasure now he's not happy at all any more
In this chapter Dorian begans to speak upon love. The Duchess said that "women love with their ears and men love with their eyes, if they ever love at all." Dorian said "It seems to me that we never do anything else." In Dorian's tone i couldn't really find any pleasure at all. When the Duchess jumped on his case he didn't argue back, instead he let Lord Henry argue for him. It seems as if Dorian is confused about his place in the world and finds pleasure in doing anything without a conscious.
Opium is a drug of pure pleasure, freedom from anxiety and personal pain this high usually last about 4 hours. His pursit of pleasure is rising. He is more laid back and calm than ever. He dosent feel the need to argue with the Ducchess because Lord henry is answering back for him. His remark, "I have never searched for happiness. Who wants happiness? I have searched for pleasure." Shows that he does not care for for happiness, only pleasure will give him a sense of feeling. Obviously there is nothing for him to really about anymore.
In the beggining of the book Dorian Really didnt have to worry about any pleasure because Basil bragged and followed him so much, he liked it. Then this girl came named sibyl camed into his life, his hold life changed. He start liking her, because he like how she acted on stage. He loved this girl.
