Dorian Gray CH 12 (Fri 1/21)

Why does Basil hesitate to believe the worst rumors he has been hearing about Dorian?  How is this related to Basil's opinions on art?

  1. Basil Hesitate To Believe The Worst Rumors He Has Been Hearing About Dorian Because He Believes That Dorian Is Still The Innocent Man That He Been Knew Him As. In The Text Basil States "Dorian, With Your Pure, Bright, Innocent FAce, And Your Marvellous Untrouble Youth- I Can't Believe Anything Against You". But He Also Says That Even Though He Doesn't See Him As Often At The Studio, He Still Believes That Dorian Is The Same Innocent Soul He Once Was. In SOme Type Of Way Basil Kind Of Believes The Things That He Hears, But The Minute Dorian Is To Say They Are Not True, He WILL BELIEVE DORIAN.!!!!

  2. Basil was hesitant because he believed that Dorian was still that pure young boy he met in the beginning. He fussed at Dorian about how bad society is degrading his name. Although Dorian's physical image had not change, his soul did and he has now changed to a different person within. As described in the text, Dorian's physical appearance makes Basil believe that the rumors he heard are not true. This shows that Basil feels that art doesn't change over time. This in a way also shows that Basil is relating Dorian as a person to art for the simple fact that he believes Dorian didn't change over time just like his artwork.

  3. Well ofcourse Basil practicly worships Dorian physically and mentally. "Dorian, with your pure, bright, innocent face, and your marvellous untroubled youth-I can't believe anything against you." This quote proves Basil's loyalty towards Dorian. It seems like Basil would rather blame Dorian's surroundings for his wrong doings before he believed the rumors. "England is bad enough I know, and English society is all wrong." The surprising part to me is that it almost seems as if Basil has more confidence in Dorian, than he has in himself. "I want you to lead such a life as will make the world respect you." This proves that Basil puts art over people's thoughts and diffrent opinions, since he views Dorian as a definite piece of art.

  4. BAsil really doesnt believe any rumors about what they anybody say about Dorian. Basil believes anything that dorian says because he is a kiss up. Basicly Basil worships Dorian.Dorian is like a king to Basil. But Dorian is chnging on the inside and not on the out.Basil think that he is still the innocent soul that he was when he was young.Basil says that he has a pure soul. And if anything happens Basil believes that Dorian surroundings did it.IN Basil picture the physical apperance change but Dorian himself didnt change.

  5. Dorain is Basil's muse, more as his role-model. Anytime someone you look up to and they do something wrong, you won't dare to believe it until they say its true. Basil worships Basil with all his heart and soul. He'll never think of bad things of dorian only good thinks from his innocent beautiful soul. Just as a piece of artwork, you shouldn't get anything bad out of it, only a good feeling. Its something you created. I think he feels that he "created" dorian.

  6. He still believes that he is pure and innocent still it shows in the text that basil doesn't believe the rumors because he still looks great but he is changed within "Dorian, with your pure, bright, innocent face, and your marvellous untroubled youth-I can't believe anything against you."this quote shows that . He will never think of Dorian doing bad things

  7. Basil hesitates to believe the rumors about dorian because he still believes that Dorian is still the same good boy he meet in the beginning of the story. Basil looks up to Dorian like he's a god he believes that Dorian can do no wrong. Basil won't belive these rumors about Dorian until he sees it in person. Basil based his on portrait on Dorian and the portrait was perfect, that's how Dorian thought of dorain perfect and he believes that if Dorian was to turn bad his surroundings did it not him.
