Dorian Gray CH 9 (Fri 1/14)

What prevents Basil from believing that Dorian attended the opera, and what does his disbelief reveal about Basil's character?

  1. The Death Of Sibyl Prevented Basil From Believig That Drain Went To The Opera. The Fact That Dorian And Sibyl Had Such A Strong Love, Basil Believed He Woukd Be With The Family Of Sibyl.
For Basil Not To Believe That Dorian Was At The Opera Show That His Character Is A Optimist. I Think. For Him To Believe That Dorian Would Do The Better Thing. I Think He A Optimis.

  2. In the text, Basil doesn't believe that Dorian attended the Opera because of Sibyl's death. He states, "They told me you were at the opera Of coarse I knew that was impossible." Basil also goes on to ask did Dorian go see Sibyl's mother after he passing. This is when Dorian lets it be known that he did, however, attend the Opera with Lord Henry and his sister, and also says he had a grand time there. The text describes Basil as being horrified and shocked about this. How could Dorian be so unsympathetic about her death and act as if he doesn't care? This disbelief shows that Basil is very sympathetic, of coarse, considerate, and kindhearted.

  3. I think that Basil didnt go to the opra because the girl of his admire died.He thinks since he was so close to Dorian he thought she was close to him.He was mad because of what happen to Sibly. If nothing would of happen he would of been at the opera. He is kind hearted because he cared for what happen to her. He cried because he liked her because Dorian liked her.

  4. Basil did not think Dorian attended the opera , due to Sibyl's death. Him telling Dorian, " They told me you were at the opera Of coarse I knew that was impossible." He is saying that Dorian would never go to the opera since Sibyl has die, due to the fact that he knows Dorian is in love with Sibyl. Basil is a very sympathetic, kind, and loving person to have been mourning someones death that he met through a friend. Basil loved her almost the way Dorian loves her.

  5. Basil knows that Dorian didnt attend the opera because of the simple fact that the only reason Dorian attend plays and stuff was to watch Sibyl and know thats she's dead he has no reason to attend. Basil knows this thats why basil didnt think that Dorian attended the opera.

  6. Basil did not believe Dorian would go back to such a place after the person he suppose to get married to killed herself. Obviously, Basil does not know of their recent argument at the Opera. His feelings for her have completely fallen to pieces. Basil, basically goes upon morals to the fact where ever a love one dies, the person in love with that person wouldn't be able to go back to that place because of all the feelings might suddenly rush back to them. Hes a kindhearted person who really cares for Dorian and knows Dorian better than that.

  7. Basil has been thinking hardly about the picture he painted of Dorian. He's been still sitting around admiring dorian for his looks and his portrayal of complete innocence."You have been the person in my life who has really influenced my art." Therefore Basil didnt belief what he was hearing as if Dorian had anything to do with Sibyl Vane committing suicide. His disbelief reveals how much he really admired Dorian. No one could persuade Basil that Dorian was anything past innocent
