Dorian Gray CH 5

How does James find out about his father, and how does his discovery affect his assessment of Sibyl's relationship with "Prince Charming"?

  1. He found out by asking his mother the question of "Were you married to my father?" His mother felt hesitant as you can tell from the the text. She finally felt that this was the momment to let it all out and give them the truth of thier father. His father was a "Gentleman & highly connected". His assessment of Dorian Grey changes no more or no less as i can see. He probably have a sense of remorse on the account of his mother sharing her story of his father and that the fact she didnt have a mother. He still has the same mind set that he would kill him if he dones any harm to her whilst he is gone to Austria.

  2. In TPDG James ask his mother was she ever married to his father and she said said no.James said that he was a scoundrel. She said that he was a gentleman. Since she said that he was a gentleman and he said that he said he was a scoundrel that made a gentleman sound like a bad person. They say that prince charming is a gentleman so James think that prince charming(Dorian Gray) is evil. He doesnt trust him with his sister he doesnt like him. He tells his mother dont let anything happens to her.

  3. -When James returns home before he leaves for his trip, he demands to know if his mother was married to his father. In the text, Mrs. Vane states that she was not married to his father but he was a perfect gentleman. The text states that he died without leaving them anything which could be the cause of James being suspicious about Dorian because both his sister and mother describe him as a perfect gentleman. After all, they don't know his name they just refer to him as Prince Charming. In the text James tells his mother to watch his sister because he doesn't want her to get hurt by this Dorian character. He says he will come back and kill him if Dorian hurts his sister Sibyl.

  4. James found out about his father through curiousity. He asked his mother was she married to his father. It pained Jame's mother to talk about her old lover Prince Charming because she never got over him evidently. James found out why his mother felt the way she did after intensely interrogating her. Their father (james and Sibyl) Prince Charming was a rich handsome man jus as Dorian was and he left their mother heartbroken. That is the reason why James hated Dorian in a way, even though he had never met Dorian the pain inside of him not being able to have a father figure made him envy Dorian. He repeatedly remined Sibyl that he did not want her to end up like their mother. " and believe me if this man wrongs my sister, I will find out who he is, track him down, and kill him like a dog." (James)

  7. As James returns home he wants to know if his parents are truely married. His mother does state that they were not married, but that his father was a perfect gentlemen. I think James was suspicious about the marriage, due to the fact that if his father was such a gentlemen, why did he not leave them anything when he died. James sees Dorian as the same man his father was. Just as his father left his mother heartbroken,he thinks Dorian will do the same to Sibyl Vane.

  8. James found out about his father when he asked his mother "were u married to my father?". SHe said no and the reason this dicovery affect his assessment of Sibyl's relationship with "Prince Charming" is because he thinks that dorian will do his sister like his father did his mother. But James mother tells him that Dorain shall do no harm to his sister b/c he is the perfect gentleman.
